The Italian language education sector continues to grow. This is confirmed by the latest data from ASILS member schools, recently featured in StudyTravel Magazine, one of the leading international publications dedicated to language education and study travel.

According to the article Growth for ASILS Italian language schools in 2025, published on 10 September 2026, ASILS schools recorded a 5.3% increase in student enrolments in 2025 compared with the previous year.

This is a significant result that confirms the continuing international interest in learning Italian and experiencing language study in Italy.

Nearly 30,000 students chose ASILS schools

During 2025, nearly 30,000 international students attended Italian language courses at ASILS member schools.

This figure demonstrates the ability of ASILS schools to attract students from around the world by offering high-quality language programmes and educational experiences that combine language learning, Italian culture and direct contact with local communities.

The increase in enrolments is particularly meaningful in an international context in which travel and study habits are changing. Students appear to be choosing more focused and personalised learning experiences, even when they have less time available for studying abroad.

International students are choosing shorter study stays

Alongside the increase in enrolments, the figures also reveal a change in the average duration of language-study stays.

In 2025, ASILS schools recorded a total of 129,197 student weeks, representing a decrease of 5.6% compared with the previous year. According to the analysis reported by StudyTravel Magazine, this decline was mainly caused by a reduction in the average course length.

This does not indicate a decline in interest in the Italian language. On the contrary, the overall number of enrolments increased. International students continue to choose Italy, but many are opting for shorter and more intensive study experiences.

This development represents both a challenge and an opportunity for the sector. Italian language schools are increasingly called upon to offer flexible programmes that meet the changing needs of internationally mobile students.

Quality at the heart of the ASILS experience

ASILS brings together schools specialising in teaching Italian as a second language that share and respect rigorous quality standards.

Qualified teachers, effective educational programmes, individual attention to students and strong connections with local communities are central elements of the experience offered by ASILS member schools.

Studying Italian in Italy means much more than attending a language course. It means experiencing Italian culture in everyday life, engaging with local communities and discovering the country’s artistic, historical and social heritage.

Italian language education as a form of cultural promotion

The growth recorded in 2025 confirms the important role played by ASILS schools in promoting the Italian language and culture internationally.

Every student who chooses to attend a course in Italy also contributes to the cultural and economic life of the destination that welcomes them. Italian language schools therefore act as a meeting point between education, cultural tourism and the international promotion of local areas.

Recognition from an international publication such as StudyTravel Magazine increases the visibility of the sector and highlights the value of the work carried out every day by ASILS member schools.

The 2025 results portray a dynamic and growing sector that is also capable of responding to the changing habits and expectations of international students.
