Yesterday, the X Conference on the Governmental Marco Polo and Turandot Programmes took place at the Aldo Moro Hall of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI). The event, promoted by UNI-ITALIA – Study in Italy, was entitled “Internationalisation and Italophony: Critical Issues and Opportunities”.

An institutional space for dialogue

The conference represented an important opportunity for dialogue among institutions, universities, international education bodies, and Italian language schools involved in the internationalisation of the Italian higher education system and in the reception of international students, particularly from China.

Discussions focused on shared challenges and strategic perspectives related to academic mobility, language preparation, and the role of Italian language education within structured international pathways such as the Marco Polo and Turandot programmes.

The contribution of ASILS

Within this framework, ASILS actively contributed to the debate, highlighting the key role played by Italian language schools in these governmental programmes, both in terms of linguistic preparation and in supporting the academic and cultural integration of students.

The discussion clearly underlined the need for stronger cooperation between institutions, universities, and language providers, as well as for greater recognition of the expertise and professionalism of accredited Italian language schools.

Challenges and strategic opportunities

The debate addressed major operational challenges, including language requirements, administrative timelines, and coordination between different actors involved in the programmes, while also highlighting important strategic opportunities linked to the promotion of Italophony, the quality of Italian language education, and the international attractiveness of the Italian university system.

Italian language schools emerged as essential partners in ensuring high standards, continuity, and student support throughout the entire pathway, from language preparation to university enrolment.

Looking ahead

The conference reaffirmed the importance of ongoing dialogue among all stakeholders and laid the groundwork for new collaborative perspectives. ASILS will continue to play an active and constructive role in supporting quality standards in Italian language education and in strengthening internationalisation pathways.

By fostering cooperation and shared vision, ASILS contributes to building a more effective, inclusive, and sustainable framework for international students choosing Italy as their academic destination.
