On 6 June 2026, the Milan branch of Scuola Leonardo da Vinci celebrated an important milestone: twenty years of teaching Italian in one of Europe’s most international and dynamic cities.
The event, entitled “Italiano Senza Confini” (Italian Without Borders), was much more than an anniversary celebration. It became an opportunity to reflect on the deeper mission shared by many language schools across Italy: bringing people together through language, culture and human connections.
More Than a Language School
When people think about studying Italian in Italy, they often imagine classrooms, grammar lessons and language certificates. Yet everyone working in the field of Italian language education knows that the real experience goes far beyond textbooks.
Every year, thousands of international students come to Italy for different reasons: university studies, professional development, artistic projects, personal interests or simply a passion for Italian culture. Language schools become their first point of contact with Italian life and often their first community abroad.
For many students, learning Italian is not only about acquiring linguistic skills. It is about building friendships, discovering new perspectives and finding a place where they feel welcomed and understood.
Italian as a Language of Connection
The programme of the Milan event reflected this philosophy perfectly.
The afternoon began with a workshop dedicated to teachers, focusing on professional development and innovative teaching practices. Later, students participated in cultural and linguistic activities designed to immerse them in the Italian language through interaction, creativity and shared experiences.
The day concluded with music, dance and a community gathering that celebrated the people who have contributed to the school’s success over the last twenty years.
This approach highlights an essential aspect of modern language education: language learning is most effective when it becomes a social and cultural experience rather than a purely academic exercise.
Building Bridges Between Cultures
Italy continues to attract learners from every continent. In classrooms across the country, students from different cultural, linguistic and professional backgrounds meet, communicate and learn together.
Language schools therefore play an important role not only in education but also in intercultural dialogue. They create environments where diversity is valued and where communication becomes a bridge between people who may otherwise never have met.
Through cultural activities, guided visits, workshops and social events, students experience Italy not as tourists but as active participants in local life.
The Value of the ASILS Network
For more than forty years, ASILS has represented excellence in the teaching of Italian as a foreign language. Its member schools share a commitment to quality, innovation and student-centred learning.
Located in some of Italy’s most beautiful cities and regions, ASILS schools offer international students the opportunity to discover the many faces of Italy while developing their language skills in authentic contexts.
Whether in Milan, Florence, Rome, Turin, Viareggio or other destinations, students encounter not only the Italian language but also the culture, traditions, art, gastronomy and lifestyle that make Italy unique.
Looking Ahead
Celebrating an anniversary is not only about looking back. It is also about imagining the future.
The future of Italian language education will involve new technologies, innovative teaching methods and increasingly diverse student communities. At the same time, the fundamental mission remains unchanged: helping people connect through language and culture.
Events such as “Italiano Senza Confini” remind us that behind every school there are stories, friendships and experiences that continue long after a course has ended.
Teaching a language means opening doors. It means helping people feel part of a community. And it means creating opportunities for meaningful encounters across borders.
Because Italian is much more than a language
Twenty years of activity represent an impressive achievement, but they also demonstrate the enduring power of language education.
As schools throughout the ASILS network continue to welcome students from around the world, they contribute every day to the international promotion of Italian language and culture.
Because Italian is much more than a language. It is a way of bringing people together.
And that is why Italian truly has no borders.
