{"id":3325,"date":"2017-10-04T18:54:32","date_gmt":"2017-10-04T16:54:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.asils.it\/certificazioni-lingua-italiana\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T16:40:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T14:40:18","slug":"certifications-of-italian-language-proficiency","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.asils.it\/en\/certifications-of-italian-language-proficiency\/","title":{"rendered":"Certifications of Italian language proficiency"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"et_pb_section_0 et_pb_section et_section_regular et_block_section pagina-con-sidebar\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_row_0 et_pb_row et_pb_row_3-4_1-4 et_block_row et_block_row_3-4_1-4\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_0 et_pb_column et_pb_column_3_4 et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_0 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h1>Certifications of Italian language proficiency<\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_1 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Foreign citizens who hold a valid <strong>residence permit<\/strong> and are over the age of 14, if they wish to apply for a <strong>Residence Card<\/strong> (i.e. the <strong>EU long-term residence permit<\/strong>), must pass an Italian language test certifying an <strong>A2 level<\/strong> of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), as established by the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The application to take the test must be submitted online to the competent Prefecture, based on the applicant\u2019s place of residence, through the website of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.interno.gov.it\/it\/temi\/immigrazione-e-asilo\/modalita-dingresso\/test-conoscenza-lingua-italiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian Ministry of the Interior.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Foreign nationals are exempt from the test if they hold a certificate issued by one of the following institutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>University for Foreigners of Siena<\/li>\n<li>University for Foreigners of Perugia<\/li>\n<li>Roma Tre University<\/li>\n<li>Societ\u00e0 Dante Alighieri<\/li>\n<li>or if they have passed the Italian language test for immigrants at a <strong>CPIA (Adult Education Centre)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Furthermore, <strong>B1 and B2 level certifications<\/strong> are required for admission to most Italian universities for international students wishing to attend degree programmes taught in Italian.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Below are the internationally recognised Italian language certifications:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_0 et_pb_accordion et_pb_module et_block_module\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_item_0 et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_pb_toggle_open et_block_module\"><h2 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">CILS<\/h2><div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content\"><h3 data-fake-id=\"#toggle-id-1\" class=\"toggler\" itemprop=\"headline\">Italian as a Foreign Language Certification<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cils.unistrasi.it\/index.htm\" rel=\"noopener\"> http:\/\/cils.unistrasi.it<br \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span>The <\/span><strong>CILS<\/strong><span> exams issued by the \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cils.unistrasi.it\/?sez0=6&amp;sez1=81&amp;sez2=249\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University for Foreigners of Siena <\/a><span>certify general proficiency in Italian, assessing all communicative and linguistic skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking, as well as knowledge of Italian language structures). They are structured across the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference and also include tests designed for children, teenagers and immigrants with limited formal education. Exams take place in June and December at centres in Italy and abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_item_1 et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_pb_toggle_close et_block_module\"><h2 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">CELI<\/h2><div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content\"><h3 class=\"toggler\" itemprop=\"headline\">Certificate of Knowledge of the Italian Language<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cvcl.it\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>http:\/\/www.cvcl.it<br \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>University for Foreigners of Perugia<\/strong> issues the <strong>CELI<\/strong> certificates, which are also structured across the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference. In addition to the standard certifications, there are exams designed for teenagers and immigrants with limited formal education, as well as the <strong>CIC<\/strong> exams, aimed at individuals working, or intending to work, in business and organisational environments where knowledge of the Italian language is required. The exams are held in three annual sessions (spring, summer and autumn) both in Italy and abroad.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_item_2 et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_pb_toggle_close et_block_module\"><h2 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">IT - Roma 3<\/h2><div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content\"><h3><span>Italian as a Foreign Language Certification <\/span><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/certificazioneitaliano.uniroma3.it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/certificazioneitaliano.uniroma3.it\/<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniroma3.it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"togglecontainer toggle_close_all avia-builder-el-1 el_after_av_textblock el_before_av_promobox enable_toggles\">\n<section class=\"av_toggle_section\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\">\n<div class=\"single_toggle\" data-tags=\"{Tutto} \">\n<div id=\"toggle-id-3-container\" class=\"toggle_wrap active_tc\">\n<div class=\"toggle_content invers-color\" itemprop=\"text\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/certificazioneitaliano.uniroma3.it\">Roma Tre University<\/a> offers five exam levels, as the C1 level is not included. The examination system is aligned with the corresponding levels of the Common European Framework of Reference and is based on authentic real-life Italian language use. Exam sessions take place at different times of the year depending on the selected level.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_item_3 et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_pb_toggle_close et_block_module\"><h2 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">PLIDA<\/h2><div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content\"><h3 data-fake-id=\"#toggle-id-4\" class=\"toggler\" itemprop=\"headline\">PLIDA \u2013 Dante Alighieri Italian Language Project<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.societadantealighieri.org\/it\/plida\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>http:\/\/www.societadantealighieri.org\/it\/plida<br \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>PLIDA<\/strong> certificates issued by the <a href=\"http:\/\/ladante.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Societ\u00e0 Dante Alighieri<\/a>, are structured across six levels, according to the scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The exams take place twice a year, and registration must be completed one month before the exam date. They are held at authorised centres worldwide.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_item_4 et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_pb_toggle_close et_block_module\"><h2 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">AIL<\/h2><div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content\"><h3 data-fake-id=\"#toggle-id-5\" class=\"toggler activeTitle\" itemprop=\"headline\">Italian Language Academy<br \/><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acad.it\" rel=\"noopener\">www.acad.it<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"togglecontainer toggle_close_all avia-builder-el-1 el_after_av_textblock el_before_av_promobox enable_toggles\">\n<section class=\"av_toggle_section\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\">\n<div class=\"single_toggle\" data-tags=\"{Tutto} \">\n<div id=\"toggle-id-5-container\" class=\"toggle_wrap active_tc\">\n<div class=\"toggle_content invers-color\" itemprop=\"text\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Firenze<\/strong> exams offered by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acad.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian Language Academy (AIL) <\/a>are structured across the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference and also include tests designed for immigrants with limited formal education. Although AIL is not among the certifications officially recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education, an increasing number of universities accept the Firenze exams as valid requirements for enrolment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are also exams specifically designed for business Italian certification (<strong>DILC<\/strong> and <strong>DALC<\/strong>).
